Arches #140 CP 1/4 sheet
Again this was purloined from a photo from the Library of Congress site on Flickr. This is Faro and Doris Caudil of Pie Town, N.M in 1940. I was struck by this couple living a hard scrabble life seemed to exude a quiet dignity and pride. Doris is able to bring color and pattern with her apron and dress to what must have been a drab world at that time. Probably Faro and Doris are no longer here, but while I painted them this past week they were very much with me.

Homesteader
This was purloined from a referance photo on the Library of Congress site on Flickr. The original photo was taken by Russel Lee, in 1940, in Pie Town, New Mexico. The man is Jim Norris. Mr. Lee was a wonderful photographer and my painting doesn't compare to his captivating photo.

I like to think that maybe I learned a little about capturing light and shadow from this exercise.

All men lead lives of quiet desperation.
